DISCOGEL®

Another treatment proposed by our neurologist specialist is DISCOGEL®. Minimally invasive spine surgery is more and more often used in patients treatment of discopathy. Percutaneous DISCOGEL® implantation is an innovative and completely safe solution.
What is DISCOGEL®

DISCOGEL® is a radiopaque gel implant based on ethanol, cellulose derivatives and tungsten, injected percutaneously into the nucleus of the intervertebral disc (nucleus pulposus).
Its operation is based on two activities: mechanical, which, thanks to the hydrophilic properties of DISCOGEL®, causes the fluid to migrate to the center of the disc and decompress the nerve structures, and biochemical, which blocks pain-generating receptors. Result: immediate pain reduction in the vast majority of patients

DISCOGEL®

Performed spinal surgery with the use of DISCOGEL®, although it requires sterile conditions (operating room), takes about 30 minutes. The patient is locally anesthetized in the supine position.
An X-ray machine is used to control the placement of the gel implant at any given time, which is enabled by the aforementioned tungsten. The preparation is introduced through a thin needle into the center of the diseased disc. DISCOGEL® initiates a mechanical process in the nucleus pulposus, consisting in decompressing the nerve structures by moving the fluid inside the disc (rehydration). The gel prosthesis has an anti-inflammatory effect, blocks pain receptors at the same time (a biochemical process), filling the cracks in the weakened fibrous ring. Faster and permanent healing of the hernia is possible due to the fact that this minimally invasive method of spinal surgery additionally strengthens the structure of the disc.

Indications for the DISCOGEL® treatment based on sample MRI images:

Cervical spine

The thoracic spine Lumbar spine

Advantages of the DISCOGEL® treatment Katowice
  • quick coverage and effects
  • local anesthesia
  • the patient leaves the facility on the same day
  • short recovery time
  • minimally invasive technique of spinal surgery - no scars
  • he possibility of treating hernias at many levels of the spine during one procedure
  • full intraoperative control using X-ray
  • No possibility of leakage due to the gel structure of the implant
  • without complications: septic, inflammatory, postoperative pain
  • protection of surrounding tissues
  • excellent tolerance: no known allergic reactions
  • no substitute, equivalent technique for symptomatic treatment or surgery
  • maintaining the height of the intervertebral disc over time: no pressure inside the disc due to collapse
  • No known complications (follow-up less than 5 years)
  • no observed relapses (observations less than 5 years)
DISCOGEL® - postoperative recommendations

After the procedure, the patient remains in the supine position for about 3 hours. In the following days, you should take care of the skin puncture site by disinfecting it and changing the dressing. It is not advisable to lift heavy objects or stay in a uniform, forced body position (longer than an hour) for a month after the procedure.

DISCOGEL® treatments are performed at the Medical Center in Katowice.
