What is an EMG test

This is a diagnostic test, the purpose of which is to check the electrical activity of muscles and conduction of peripheral nerves. EMG examination is performed to determine or recognize if any of the nerves or muscles has been damaged. Thanks to EMG, it is easy to recognize the state of the organs of the nervous system and find diseased places. Thanks to the examination, it is possible to efficiently locate pathological changes in the muscles, determine their nature, and determine the dynamics of the disease development.Electromyography is a basic additional test used to diagnose diseases of the peripheral nervous system and muscles.
NEUROMAG runs an Electromyography Laboratory in its centre, which conducts on-site examinations using an EMG device. We perform EMG examinations of both individual nerves as well as comprehensive electromyography examinations of entire nerves and muscles.

EMG test use

Patients requiring diagnostics of the nervous system are a group for which the EMG test is dedicated. An example of an application for an EMG test are diseases and conditions, including:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- elbow canal syndrome
- tarsal tunnel syndrome
- peripheral nerves of the lower and upper limbs
- nerve root damage in disc herniation
- facial nerve damage
- suspected tetany
- assessment of muscle condition
- muscle wasting of unknown cause
- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- myasthenia gravis

EMG examination can also be used by patients suffering from cervical and lumbosacral syndromes (shoulder neuralgia, sciatica), stiffness syndrome of various etiology, or in the case of excessive abnormal tension in the course of nervous system diseases (spasticity). The range of diagnosed diseases is extremely wide and often this test is the only method that allows the doctor to determine the disease by diagnosing the source.

The scope of the study and all information are provided by the registrant. This examination requires an individual approach to each patient's case.

EMG study preparation

When registering for the examination, patients of Neuromag Pszczyna, Kobiór, Tychy and Katowice are informed in detail how to prepare for the examination, what to take with them, and are also asked to answer several key questions.
The body part to be tested should be thoroughly washed before the test. Do not use creams, ointments or other cosmetics intended for the skin in the area of the test site. All metal ornaments should also be removed as this may distort the results. In addition, if we are going for the test on a cold day, we should be there earlier to warm up our muscles before the start of the test so that the result is not falsified.
